Abstract: Clever programmers, artists, and designers work hard every day to create the illusion of intelligence in interactive real-time applications. How exactly does intelligence manifest itself in games? And what is the current state of game AI? This talk will take a pragmatic look at some characteristics of games, the game industry, and the typical development process in order to gain insight on how each contributes to the artificial intelligence that ends up in a finished game. I'll share some of my own personal successes and failures as a game AI developer in an effort to pass along some concepts--both concrete and philosophical--that I wish I had understood earlier in my career. This talk will give you an idea of the set of problems and concerns that are constantly on the mind of an AI programmer.
