Abstract: The constraints imposed by the medium in which a game is played function as a powerful influence on game design. Whether the game is chess, Monopoly, Fast Food Franchise, Dungeons and Dragons, a LARP, or a computer game, they are products of the available game medium and technology. However, constraints often become so taken for granted that they are enshrined as integral to the game. This limits development in a new medium with different constraints. This talk will focus on how table-top roleplaying evolved into boffer and interactive literature style live action roleplaying (LARPs), and how those lessons apply to games on computers and handheld devices.
