Abstract: Game developers are accustomed to employing a wide variety of techniques of achieve as close to real-time performance as possible on low-cost hardware. Most other industries, such as the training and simulations world, have historically managed to achieve the performance by "throwing hardware" at the problem, which has led to many expensive custom solutions. These industries are now beginning to realize that applying game development techniques can provide the answers they need at a fraction of the cost. This talk presents a brief history of the Serious Games initiative, discusses some current industry standards for interactive simulation development, and closes with a demonstration of several off-the-shelf toolkits for developing military-grade simulations.
